A Special Note About The Medal

Just as we are exhorted to place ourselves on the back of the Cross, the Medal, which itself can be blessed as a sacramental, is reversed, so that the image of St. Benedict is on the back of The Cross. The Medal, which is embedded in the Crucifix, traces back to the 19th Century, and by order of the Sacred Congregation of Rites, can be used in a very special anointing of the sick, called the Blessing of St. Maur. This blessing is usually done with a relic of The True Cross, but thanks to this special order can be given using the Medal or Medal Crucifix of St. Benedict.
